Sigh.

Man oh man. I am pathetic. Get me into something that requires me to blog and I stop doing it! The combination of second shift, holiday knitting and visitors has not been good for my blogging. Anyways, before I do absolutely anything else I really need to thank my SP 11 Mia!

Thank You Mia!!!

She spoiled me absolutely rotten despite my lack of acknowledgement on here. I think I've missed posting about a few packages (though pictures of all have been taken!) so I will do an extra special post with all the pictures this weekend when I have a lot more time. She was great at increasing my knitting library though (a book in each package!) and found some yarns that I had really wanted to try (or hadn't even heard of!). Thanks for making my fall great Mia!

Lots Happening!

Wow... sorry everyone (especially my SP)... I thought I had updated more recently.

Anyways, Life has still been crazy. I've kind of joined up with a kniting group in the area and am taking some classes and such.... it's a lot of fun!

I also received my second SP 11 package! Thanks so much to my SP... it was great! I love getting the books since my knitting book collection is almost non-existant. The yarn is also gorgeous. And the bierdeckels!!! OMG! I LOVE them!!! I have a huge collection from when I was living there and I think these will go great with it. I haven't had a chance to take pictures yet, but I will have pictures up by the end of the week!

So yeah... big post once I get pictures taken.

Moved... but still no internet

Well, everything is now in the house (though no where near put away). Except a cable line. It was supposed to be installed today, but apparently when I told them "we don't have any outlets or anything, you need to install them" they didn't realize they needed to install everything. So now I have to wait longer for internet at my house. This coffee is getting expensive. At least I have my yarn, lol. Hope you all are well!

Moving Sucks

Hey guys. OK... so I have no internet (horray for coffee shops with WiFi!)... no furniture... nothing to knit except one sock. Life is stressful. But I thought I'd try to get a short blog entry in.. and I even remembered my memory card so I can add a few pictures!

I'll start with my first package from my Facebook Secret Knitting pal! She's from Canada and got me some yarn from a nearby wool mill (I think that's where it was from.. made locally for sure!) Anyways, it's some wool that is nice and warm. I haven't quite decided what to do with it though. Here's a pic of the contents:

Moving

Hi.

I know. I PROMISED that I would post as soon as I got back. But it turns out that I'm moving... tomorrow. So I haven't had much time to breathe, let alone compose a blog entry covering the past 1.5-2 months. So. I'm leaving tomorrow, will hopefully be signing a lease for a rental house on Friday, and will post a big huge blog entry this coming weekend.

REALLY bad blogger!

Hey.

Well I was planning on bringing my laptop with me to Madison and writing this big huge entry with all of these great pictures and stories about the last month and a half. But of course I forgot my computer at home. Life has been crazy busy. Between driving to Madison for interviews and trying to pack up all of my belongings, I haven't had a lot of spare time. And the time I did have I wanted to knit! But it's looking really good that I've found a job (I have an interview tomorrow that is really more of a formality) and it looks like C and I will be moving to Madison ASAP. So hopefully sometime in the next few weeks I will have pictures of a new apartment and new stash storage location. And.. I PROMISE that once I get back home I will immediately get out my computer and write a huge post about knitting.

In the meantime.... I got my first SP11 package... and it was AMAZING! I can't thank my SP enough! I got a ball winder (which will definitely come in handy for all my Wollmeise, etc) and she also got me a skein of STR in Seastone (I think that's what it was called... I don't have it with me). GORGEOUS. And I think best of all she got me a copy of Knitting Vintage Socks.... SIGNED BY NANCY BUSH! Yes, that's right people, Nancy Bush told me to enjoy knitting her sock patterns. I was speechless! And no one was home for me to gush to, lol. I will definitely post pictures of it when I'm back on my own computer.

Anyways, I guess that is all for now as I am on a computer in the hotel lobby. I should get ready for my interview tomorrow anyways. I will try to be a better blogger... life is just getting in the way currently..... Sorry!

SP 11 Questionnaire

Hi Secret Pal... I've been a bad blogger recently, but now that I'm almost settled down again (to soon be uprooted again) I will hopefully be able to blog more often!

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I've just been in Germany for about a year and got really big into sock yarn. I have worked withthe fabulous Wollmeise, and even though I found it slightly splitty... I still love it to death. I haven't had a chance to work with pretty much any of the American sock yarns though. I like pretty much anything... but would like to venture into more of the natural fibers as opposed to acrylic (though some acrylic can be nice..).

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

Currently I have a big cloth bag that most of my knitting things are just kind of strewn into. For my project bags I have a small pencil case for each in which I store the necessities for the project, but nothing to store the spares in.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

Well I technically learned when I was in middle school from my dad. My dad has been knitting for a long time and one day I decided I wanted to learn too. I knit a "scarf" until I had about a square and decided that was enough and put it down for several years. My freshman year of college I was trying to decide what to give my boyfriend for Christmas. He's one of those guys who wants only functional gifts.. and I'm one of those girls who likes to give sentimental gifts, lol. Anyways, I decided that knitting him a scarf would be the perfect compromise. So I had my dad show me again how to do it. After that I did some little stuff off and on like dish cloths and such until I went on study abroad my junior year. My boyfriend and I were about 6-7 hours apart by train, and I decided I needed to find something to do. So I knit him another scarf. My knitting has become more and more frequent since then, especially when I was back in Germany this past year and learned to knit socks. I would say that I'm an advanced beginner/intermediate. I haven't come across anything that has really tripped me up yet. If I have good instructions I feel I can do it at least decently.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

I do. It's here. It's pretty much a list of every knitting book out there that sounds interesting, haha. I don't have many.

5. What's your favorite scent?

I tend to lean towards the more... vanilla, sandalwood, the "Sensual Amber" at Bath & Body Works. I don't like the really fruity or really flowery scents.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

I have a huge sweet tooth. I love milk chocolate. I like most things, but not coconut, and I don't really like dark chocolate.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

I don't do too much else. I am sort of learning how to crochet, and I have some scrapbooking to do from being in Europe for the past year. Knitting seems to be the one thing that I actually see projects through on though. I don't currently know how to spin, but that is one thing I am interested in learning. I've been eyeing drop spindles and fiber online.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I like oldies, and jazz, and the mellow top 40 stuff. Not a big fan of Fergie or Shakira or those kind of top 40. I also don't like country or rap very much. Yes, everything plays MP3s.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?

I am really into reds and greens and blues right now, as well as some more natural colors. I am really not a big fan of pink. Or purple really, but more so than pink.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I am currently at home with my parents until I move in (*hopefully*) the next month. Then I will be living with my boyfriend of almost 5 years and we are hoping to get a cat.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

All of the above except ponchos. Though some caplets I've seen look really cute.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Right now it's SOCKS SOCKS SOCKS! They are relatively quick and it's easy to try a new technique on them.

13. What are you knitting right now?

Currently I have about 3 pairs of socks on the needles and an afghan I've been working on for a while.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

I do.. it's nice to know that someone cared enough to take the time to make you something.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

I tend to be a straight needle gal (I use dpns for socks), but there are definitely times when circs are called for. I prefer metal because I always feel like bamboo is going to break on me.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

No, but I am planning on buying a ball winder as soon as I can find the time to place the order.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?

From April 2006. It's the afghan I've been working on (Rambling Rows). I found the pattern on my spring break and am about 1/3 of the way done with the largest size, but I was in Germany for the past year and it was too much to bring with me.

18. What is your favorite holiday?

I would have to say Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's always been a big family time for me and I love all the traditions we have.

19. Is there anything that you collect?

Just yarn, lol.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

Umm.. I would really like to try some of the American sock yarn.. like Cherry Tree Hill or Lorna's Laces or some of this stuff that everyone is talking about. One pattern I would also really like is the Rogue Hoodie. Also some of the lace shawls like the Shetland triangle, Swallowtail Shawl, and the Seraphim shawl look really beutiful. I don't have any subscriptions to knitting magazines.. though I am seriously considering getting one to Interweave.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?

I would like to learn how to do colorwork... it looks very interesting. I would also like to do a big lace project... not just on socks.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Yes I am! Umm.. I think it's like 8.5" circumference and 8.5" in length... I have short square feet.

I lied, no pictures today. I couldn't find the cord that connects the base for my camera to my computer. And now I'm leaving on vacation for a week (yes, right after I got back to the States.. it's to visit my grandparents). Back in the U S of A

Hey, I'm back in the States safe and sound. My bags only weighed a GAZILLION kilos... no. really. I knit a little on the plane, but there was a 9-12 month old next to me who wanted to play during the flight, so it was either that or have him cry. I will have some pictures and such up eventually. I promise. I feel like a very bad blogger. I'll try for tomorrow, because Sunday my family is going to visit my grandparents for a week and I won't have access to a computer really. OK. pictures TOMORROW. I promise.

Leaving on a Jetplane

Well, in T minus 6.5 hours I am taking the first of 4 flights to get me home. It is definitely bittersweet, but I think at this point more sweet than bitter. Anyways, I will write again once I am home and have had some sleep. I have my second of the Trekking socks all set to knit. Maybe I'll even finish it today... I do have 18+ hours of travelling I'm doing...

That's the sound my computer makes when I try to turn it on. Apparently that means there is something wrong with the video card, though nothing happened to it between me turning it off last night and trying to turn it on this morning. Sigh. I really don't need to deal with this right now. Anyways, this means no picture posts... and probably not many other posts... while I work this out. I can update slightly from work, but I have lots of other stuff to do too.

I'm Becoming a Smurf

So I think my fingers are now permanently blue. But the good news is that I finished my first of the Sidewinder socks.

The increases and decreases on the heels and toes don't really match (the decreases bump up a lot more than the increases) and that kind of bothers me.

Also the toe join is weird... because the Kitchener is done from the wrong side.

OK, umm. I guess that's all I really have to say for now. The first sock went really quickly, so I think I'm going to try to finish the second one the beginning of this coming week. I'm going to save the second of the Simple Trekking socks for the flights home because I'm doing them on my bamboo needles. Hopefully airport security will be ok with that. They should be.

Long Time No See...

Sorry I've been away for a couple days. C left on Thursday to head back to the States and I wanted to spend some time with him since we don't know when exactly we'll get to see each other next.

Lots of knitting has been accomplished in the last few days though, so get ready!

Cast-On: Summer Solstice.. 21 June, 2007
Finished: 2 July, 2007
Pattern: Monkey by Cookie A.
Yarn: Wollmeise Superwash Sock in Campari Orange, medium
Needles: Inox 2.5 mm dpns
Pattern Notes: The first sock's cast-on was a little tight, so I cast-on over 2 needles for the second one. Otherwise I absolutely love this pattern and will definitely make it again!!

I also finished one of the Simple Trekking socks. It's very comfy, though I think the thin stripes obscure what little pattern there is on them (there are 2 sections where the ribbing switches from k2p2 to p2k2... can you see them??)

And because I was in the mood for something new, I also cast-on for Nona's Sidewinders.

I'm through Act II and they are turning out really cool so far except for a few things:

1) I didn't do the first couple M1R increases correctly in the toe so there are a few small holes

2) I accidentally did the first 22 rows of the leg in garter stitch instead of only 14.

3) The yarn turns my hands blue.

I also joined the Mystery Stole 3.. but I have no yarn for it, and I haven't ever really done a big lace project... so I'm putting it off for now.

So that's all the knitting news there is for now. There will probably be a lot more in the next week since I don't have much else to do, haha.

Quick Update

Hi there. Just dropping in quick to say hi and that my Monkeys are finished! They look great and I am awaiting better weather and more time to take some great pictures.

C is unfortunately heading back to the States on Thursday, and I am trying to get all the last minute stuff together before I leave in 2 weeks. Like ordering some (a lot) more Wollmeise, haha.

Anyways, I probably won't post again until after C leaves.. be that Thursday evening or Friday or what. Hopefully I'll have some pictures for you by then though.

Munich and Socks

Yesterday C and I headed down to Munich and met up with Elemm and Cashyie from Knitters Uncensored for a yarn crawl and just hanging out. I, being the bad blogger that I am, didn't take ANY pictures while in Munich. Here's a recount of the day though with some pictures. Cashyie brought me an awesome present since today is Canada Day (Happy Canada Day Cashyie!):

We then headed to various yarn stores around the city. I won't rat out anyone else's purchases (haha) but I bought a few skeins of Lana Grosse Royal Tweed in varying brown/grey colors for a scarf:

I also bought some yarn for my Facebook secret pal, but I won't post it on here in case she reads my blog. After hitting up the yarn stores Cashyie had to head in to work (grad school sucks, haha) and Elemm, C and I headed to the Victorian Tea House and drank some tea (and coffee) and discussed things like Wollmeise. Because C and I hadn't really been in Munich for much other than Oktoberfest before, Elemm was kind enough to take us to some touristy things like the gardens at Schloss Nymphenburg and the Hofbraeu Haus. The Hofbraeu Haus wasn't so bad tourist wise because we went upstairs in the beer garden. Elemm had pulled out his Jaywalkers and several people came up to talk with him about them. It was fun. Another knitter came and joined us...Celina (thanks Elemm).. and all of us (except C) had a good time knitting for a while. I turned the heel on my second Monkey and started on the gusset:

Train Knitting

So this has to be a pretty quick post, because it's C's birthday today. But I thought I'd give you a few pictures of the finished Tubey, of the Monkey socks, and from my trip to Freiburg this past weekend. So here you are:

Finished 20 June, 2007
Pattern: Tubey from Knitty
Yarn: Lana Grosse Numero Uno and Numero Uno Tweed
Needles: 5 mm dpns and a 5 mm circ
Pattern Notes: I did an i-cord bind off for both the sleeves and the bottom. The back is a little too wide on top and it poofs out a lot. Also, the green yarn was slightly thinner than the black and made a little too airy of a fabric on the 5 mm needles. I'm not entirely pleased with it, but the pattern was good. Maybe I'll try again sometime.


Otherwise the Monkeys are progressing OK. I finished the first one while we were in Freiburg and cast on for the second on the train ride home. Trains are excellent places to knit. An old lady came up to me on the train ride there and looked at my sock and said "Schoene Muster" (nice pattern). It was cool. Anyways, here are some pictures of the sock:

Ravelry!!

So apparently I had to go on vacation in order to get my Ravelry invite!! I got the email on Friday sometime. Anyways... if you're on it.. add me! My screen name is kniteurope. I've added who I remembered had it (not many people), so if you have it and I'm not your friend yet, add me.

I've been doing some stuff on it, but a lot of the yarn I have isn't on there (and I don't have good pictures/am clueless as to what each yarn weight is). But it's awesome so far! I'm very excited.

I will add photos from the weekend later. It was a lot of fun though. I am done with one Monkey and part way down the leg of the second. More tomorrow..

Day One

I was so excited to begin knitting today. I brought my yarn to work so I could cast on over lunch (Summer of Socks began at 5 am EST... or 11 am here in Germany). And I proceeded to knit while I was "waiting on an experiment." And then I knit on the bus ride home. And most of the evening (I stopped to go to the grocery store and eat dinner). And all night. And now it's 3 am and I'm this far:

Sorry the picture is crap. I just took it and obviously the lighting at 3 am kind of sucks for picture taking. But anyways, as you can see, I've already turned the heel. People say that the Monkey socks go fast.... and man they weren't kidding! I'm knitting them on 2.5 mm aluminum needles. And it's in the Wollmeise superwash sock yarn in Campari-Orange (soooooo pretty.).

That's all for now I suppose... I should really get to bed. Oh, also wanted to say that C and I are headed over to Freiburg for the weekend, so there won't be any updating between now and Monday. Plenty of knitting will be taking place though... long train rides are good for that!

Summer of Socks Preview... and a little more

Well since the start of Summer of Socks is just around the corner (aka TOMORROW!!!) I thought I would tell you a little about the patterns I'm looking at and the goals I have for the summer.

First of all: Goals. I talk a big talk, but really I haven't done much sock-wise. All of the (3 pairs) socks I've made (successfully) have been top down, heel flap, either stockinette or some knit/purl rib combination, and on 5 dpns. Yes, I've started both the Jaywalkers and Snicket socks-- and had no problem with executing the stitch patterns themselves-- but they were too small and I only reached the gusset of the first sock of each before having to frog. So here are my goals (in no particular order).

1) Do a toe-up sock. There are a couple patterns that I want to do that are written for toe-up... so I hope this will be accomplished easily.
2) Do a lace sock.
3) Do a cabled sock.
(Both 2 and 3 will be accomplished easily based on the patterns I'm looking at)
4) Try something other than dpns-- though this would require purchasing some circs, so we'll see.
5) Short row heel

OK.. now for the patterns that I'd really like to do (also in no particular order).

1) Monkey
2) Jaywalkers
3) Snicket
4) Zokni
5) Brigit
6) Elfine
7) Aran Twist-- from the Sockamaniac Sock-a-long Yahoo! group

Right........ so that's more than a pair a week if I want to do them all during SOS. And some of those are really complicated. But those are just a few of the free patterns I've seen online that have caught my attention. I'm really excited about this though and have quite a few long travel days ahead of me in which I can get a lot accomplished. Hopefully.

I also wound my Wollmeise into balls (I recently discovered that the nice "center pull" ball that I made is really tangled, so I decided to just wind the Wollmeise into a ball as to not subject the beautiful, squishy yarn to the same fate) in preparation for Summer of Socks.

On a Tubey note, since 5/6 people said to just finish it in green.. I decided to follow your advice and am working diligently on it. I hope to finish it tonight (not much to do.. maybe another inch, bind off, and weave in the ends).

Since I'm at work right now I'm not going to take the time to add links for all the patterns-- and I have a few pictures of my Wollmeise being all pretty and balled up. I'll add these later today once I get back to my apartment.

A little present for myself for the start of SOS. 2 sets of 2.5 mm (US "#1") 80 cm (32") addi turbo circs!!! Yeah, I was in a LYS today and saw that they were pretty much half the price of what I could get them for in the States.... so I bought them.

On and Off the Needles

Well there's been some knitting in the last couple days. I was hoping to finish Tubey this weekend, but I had a little more knitting to do than I thought. This is what it looked like yesterday afternoon when I put it on some waste yarn to try it on...

Yeah, notice those big things sticking out at the armpits? I guess I made the back a little too long. Oh well. It's looking ok though, and fits a lot better than I thought it would as my first sweater and not using the yarn called for. I definitely need to knit a few more inches though. I want it to be on the longer side. I put it back on the needles and have been knitting on it some more, but still have about 5 inches or so to go according to my measurements.

I also frogged the Snicket Socks. I know that 4 out of the 5 people who took my poll said to try to rework the heel again, but the yarn wasn't standing up to frogging very well.. and I didn't think it would be good to frog the heel another 2 times (4 times total). I'll cast on again for them with another 2 repeats maybe. I'm going to wait until Summer of Socks starts up though.

Lastly, I went to a local flea market today and found some good deals. I got all of this for only 2.50 euro (the 3 50 g balls of sock yarn were 1 euro, and the krug was 1.50 euro)!

It's a nice red color yarn.. and it came with the little reinforcing stuff for the heels! I'm not sure what brand or anything.. Roedel I guess?... but who can pass up 150 g of sock yarn for 1 euro? Not me, that's for sure. Haha.

Based off of the Triangle Ribs stitch pattern in Harmony Guides Vol. 2, heel flap, gradual standard toe (I don't know what to call it... you decrease 1 round, knit 3 rounds, [decrease 1, knit 2] (x2), [decrease 1, knit 1] (x3), and then decrease to the number of stitches you want and kitchener them)
Yarn: "Funny Strumpf Color" (Coats GmbH) 6-ply in color #7108 (this is a link to it at the store I bought it at... a LYS in Erlangen). It's 75% superwash and 25% nylon. I used a little more than half... don't have a scale for exact measurement... off of 2 150g skeins (ie, I used a little more than 1 skein).
Needles: Inox 3.5 mm dpns
Pattern Notes: For some reason my gauge was a little looser at the start of the second sock or something and I got a 1/2 less repeat in the ankle than on the first one and the same number for the rest of the sock. This meant that the heel flap and toe on one sock began with a mostly knit stitch row in one and a mostly purl row in the other (the one on the left-- his right foot-- above is the second one ending with mostly purl stitches before the toe, while the other one is mostly knit stitches)... something that bothers me slightly. They also slouch a bit at the ankle... but I wasn't about to rip them out, lol.

C's been wearing them when possible even though it's been too warm for them (he was wearing the one while I was working on the second.. lol)... so I know he likes them at least.

In other news, I got my partner for the Facebook Secret Knitting Pals!!!! I'm so excited! I have some very excellent ideas of stuff to send. Unfortunately my pal doesn't like orange, so I'm going to have to find something else to do with my Wollmeise yarn in the Sonne colorway. I'm thinking about taking Elemmaciltur up on the invite to come down to Munich (last Saturday of June-- the 30th?) before I head back.. so maybe I can arrange a swap with someone down there. I know that Bockstark Knits used that colorway in the past.

I've been knitting on Tubey since I finished the socks, but no real noticeable progress. Speaking of which... the new Knitty is out. I really like the Coachella pattern. I already ordered yarn to make Tempting II in a "knit a long" of sorts with my friend Jenny though.
